## SINGLE COLUMN 2007I. BUFFY: VAMPIRE SLAYER: 2. HUSH. 12/14/99 CHEERS to quiet suc- cesses. The December 14 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled "Hush," was a mas- terpiece of suffering in silence and one of this season's best episodes— of any series. Written and Speechless: directed by Buffy's the show's Gentlemen creator, Joss Whedon, "Hush" was a largely wordless night- mare, thanks to some voice-stealing demons called Gentlemen who float around doing some literally unspeakable things to victims who can't yell. Whedon devised any number of ingenious ways to propel the plot without dialogue, prov- ing that the unsaid can be scarier than all the screams in Hollywood. 1/18/2000 Through 5/16/2000 2007J. BUFFY: VAMPIRE SLAYER: 3. Buffy vs. Dracula The Slayer's fifth season opens as the renowned Transylvanian bloodsucker casts his dark shadow over Sunnydale. The gang is on red alert after Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) reports a surprise encounter with Dracula. Riley wants to tackle him immediately, even though the caped one's metamorphoses reveal he is more powerful than the average vamp. But Buffy suggests they avoid him until they have more info, and Riley thinks she's starstruck by the famous—and famously sexy—count. How- ever, it's Xander who falls under his spell. And as Buffy tries to knock the daylights out of Drac, the sun's rising on a new development at home. Dawn: Michelle Trachtenberg. (100) 9/26/00 10/3/2000 Through 11/28/2000 2007K.
