The American Experience serves up an edifying American History 101 lesson with "The Way West." Director Ric Burns' expansive two-part, six-hour documentary gets underway Monday on most PBS stations and concludes Tuesday. A lot of ground is covered in this slowly paced but informative chronicle of the settling, or—depending on whose side you take—unsettling of the West. Descriptions of atrocities visited upon both homesteaders and Native Americans can be unnerving for some youngsters, and Part 2 contains some graphic photos of corpses.
  • THE WILD WEST: Soldier's Life
    incl. boredom, hunger & battles.

  • 500 NATIONS :
Debut: An ambitious four-part study of Native American cultures. "Long before the first Europeans arrived here, there were some 500 nations already in North America," says host Kevin Costner, who returns to the subject that inspired "Dances with Wolves," his 1990 Oscar-winning film. The first installment opens with the 1890 tragedy at Wounded Knee, and examines the Anasazi and Maya civilizations before moving on to the Aztec empire and the impact of Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortes.
