On the Trail. 2/7/89 The third leg of Larry McMurtry's sprawling cattle-drive saga, Lonesome Dove, finds the Hat Creek outfit nearing Ogallala, Neb., and a reunion with the great lost love of Gus's life, Clara Allen (Angelica Huston). Huston's portrayal of the feisty Clara is so well-done, it's not difficult to imagine why Gus has carried a torch for her. (6 PM 5) 3. The Plains. 2/7/89 If you've stayed with Lonesome Dove this far, tonight's conclusion will prove rewarding if somewhat bittersweet. Robert Duvall might as well start working on his Emmy acceptance speech, if only for the moving scene in which he and Tommy Lee Jones, as two grizzled old saddle mates, bid a reluctant adios. As this eight-hour, multimillion-dollar miniseries closes out, the drovers finally reach Montana Territory after their grueling and tragic trek. (8 PM 5) 4. Return. 2/8/89 1891. RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE PART 1: THE VISION 11/14/93 Debut: While this three-part sequel lacks the true grit of the 1989 miniseries, Return to Lonesome Dove rides tall in the saddle as a Western in the "Red River" tradition. Jon Voight replaces Tommy Lee Jones as Woodrow Call, the stubborn, brooding former Texas Ranger, who has a new vision for the 1870s; brooding himself on the ranch he's begun settling in the Montana Territory. So Call rounds up mustangs in Texas and gathers a crew for a trek to Big Sky country that rescues old wounds, tests loyalties and attracts villains. Filmed on location in Montana, the drama re- unites several Lonesome Dove cast members, including Rick Schroder as the innocent, stoic Newt Dallas (2:00). LONESOME DOVE THE SERIES (Debut) 9/23/94 Through 11/18/94 Lonesome Dove: The Series (syndicated; check local listings)—It looks terrific (stunning Alberta locations sub for Montana, where Newt Call now finds himself). And stars Scott Bairstow and Christianne Hirt are likable. The first two episodes are saddled with too many late-20th-century- isms, but director Sidney Furie keeps things moving, and he knows when to point the camera at the scenery. This time out, James Garner is Woodrow Call, the laconic lawman now turned bounty hunter. His search in 1880s Texas for a crazed 19- year-old killer from Mexico interweaves colorful, malevolent characters into intriguing subplots and often violent action. A two-part 1995 TV-movie.
