Our commercial broadcasters have al- ways been reluctant to buy shows from abroad. They are, of course, wary of cul- tural differences that could turn off Ameri- can audiences. And even when the im- ported shows are from Britain, there are language difficulties some of their dia- lects are intelligible only to dedicated PBS viewers. Add business considerations, such as the need to maintain good rela- tions with Hollywood producers, and it's easy to see why networks prefer to buy American almost exclusively.
The bad news is that, as a result, we miss quite a bit of excellent television being produced abroad. The good news is that a new PBS series, Long Ago & Far Away, offers young people an oppor- tunity to see 16 weeks of excellent chil- dren's shows from a number of different countries-Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Eng- land, Canada, France, Hungary, Denmark and the United States. About half of them are award-winning shows.
Many of the programs are based on folk tales and fairy tales, some are ver- sions of classic children's books, and oth- ers have original screenplays. Most em- ploy either puppets, clay animation or standard cartoons. A few use live actors.
The series is scheduled by PBS on Saturdays at 7:30 P.M. (ET), but if, as sometimes happens, the manager of your local PBS station marches to the beat of his own scheduling drum, you'll have to consult your listings.
With James Earl Jones as host and with scripts that capture the pace-and grace-of the delightful stories, the series becomes a treat for the ears as well as the eyes. The producers say they hope that the quality and content of the series will kindle the imaginations of young viewers, pique their curiosity and encourage them to find more stories-in books. Parents who can spare the time to watch with their children can help on this score.
The series certainly offers a change from most of what American children watch on Saturday mornings-poorly ani- mated cartoon characters, for the most part, acting out witness scenes designed more to fill time between commercials than to tell an imaginative tale. In Long Ago & Far Away, the ancient and re- spected art of storytelling is enhanced by television.
We can only hope that American youngsters can still enjoy watching pup- pets moving to the lyrical words of Robert Browning's "The Pied Piper of Hamelin." Perhaps their viewing habits aren't yet so set that they fail to appreciate accom- plished British stage actors performing the Grimm Brothers' Sleeping Beauty or the creative animation that earned Can- ada's "The Man Who Planted Trees" a 1987 Oscar in the animation category.
A word of warning: On March 18, the Long Ago & Far Away story is the won- derful puppet version of The Wind in the Willows that won an International Emmy as best children's program. It is being offered as a "two-hour pledge special." That means most PBS stations will inter- rupt it once or twice to shake their tin cups for five or 10 minutes. If you tape it, you can fast-forward over those interrup- tions.
