This is the quintessential
Fred Astaire/Ginger
Rogers movie. Although
it was the fourth screen outing
for the dancing sensations, the
1935 movie was the first for
which a script had been tai-
lored specifically for the duo's
talents. The movie opens with
Astaire in London preparing to
open a show. His preshow
preparations at his hotel dis-
turb the tenant below, the beau-
tiful Rogers. The pair, of
course, fall in love, but Rogers
storms off to Venice when she
mistakenly comes to believe
that Astaire is married to her
best friend. All's well that ends
well, but it is the marvelous
dancing and the performances
of the supporting cast (such
stellar practitioners of the char-
acter actor's art as Edward Ev-
erett Horton, Helen Broderick,
and Eric Blore) that make Top
Hat a cinema classic. The fa-
mous song-and-dance numbers
"Top Hat, White Tie and
Tails" and "Check to Check"
are featured.
