China Beach was the U.S. Armed Forces R&R facility in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam. The beach and the Evac hospital nearby are the setting for a new drama series that gets off to an auspicious start tonight. Well-written (by series co-creator John Sacret Young) and excellently played by a cast of relative newcomers, this two-hour pilot episode is a convincing re-creation of 1967 Vietnam. Engrossing (if sometimes hard to follow), it weaves together the stories of four women in Da Nang, two veterans and two newcomers. The vets: an Army nurse (Dana Delany) who's about to go home and a hooker (Marg Helgenberger) who isn't. The newbies: a 19-year-old "doughnut doll" (Nan Woods) who's in-country hoping to find her Marine brother, and a USO singer (Chloe Webb) who's in-country for a week—because it's full of men. (8 PM 4) 4/26/88
China Beach, ABC's new Vietnam War series, premiered last night with an impressive two-hour pilot. Tonight, the series serves up its first hour-long show—and the results are encouraging. The episode, which revolves around a captured VC terrorist, is heavy on the irony without being heavy-handed. Stars Dana Delany and Chloe Webb are agreeably supported by the men in the cast, especially Michael Boatman (as Sam, the NCO who runs the hospital mortuary) and Brian Wimmer (as Boone, an ex-grunt who now works as China Beach's lifeguard). (9 PM 4)
Even if TV these days was brimming with interesting new programming (which it isn't), China Beach would still stand out. Another solid episode tonight has Beckett (the superb Michael Boatman) confronting moral and racial issues, and Cherry (Nan Woods) facing some harsh realities about the effect war can have on a person. The hour also marks the directorial debut of John Sacret Young, the series' executive producer. He wrote China Beach's pilot episode, and the screenplays for "Testament" and "A Rumor of War." Reminiscences by actual Vietnam veterans are intercut with new and previously aired scenes from the series that mirror those memories.
The comments of former Army nurses, Red Cross volunteers and USO entertainers are laden with both deep emotion and dark humor. They recall battling everything from rhinoceros beetles in the Red Cross "beach" to their own emotions—left frazzled by the perpetual horrors of the war in which they were immersed. Says a former nurse of her ordeal: "We were living Vietnam 24 hours a day," while people back home were getting only "15 minutes a night on television." Recalls another vet: "It became harder to smile at all the incoming guys because you knew that they all wouldn't be going home. But you had to—that's why you were there."
